Marketing vs Sales

First of all, you need to have both! One isn’t better than the other because they both represent something different.

Marketing

In a nutshell, marketing is the process of funneling potential consumers to your product or business. There are many different strategies to do this and when I usually meet with clients, at times they feel overwhelmed because of all the things that can be involved in marketing. But like I said, it is a process.

Aspects of Marketing

Inbound (Online) Marketing

  • Social Media
  • Websites
  • Blogs
  • Online Ads
  • Video Marketing
    and more…

Outbound (Offline) Marketing

  • Television
  • Billboards
  • Magazine Ads
  • Flyers
  • Mail
    and more…

Sales

Sales, is what takes place after the potential consumer has made it to your product or business. Think about it, I’m sure there have been times when you know you needed something and you found the product, it does exactly what you want and need it to do; but…. then you decided that you don’t really need it at the moment and it can wait. Now if you’re the business owner or the owner of the product, this isn’t something you want a potential buyer to think or for that matter, do! Sales is what needs to happen to make sure the product is bought at that moment. Usually it is a representative from the business who is able to answer the questions needed to make sure the product is bought. And believe it or not, there is even a strategy to say the correct thing to make someone decide they need the product at that moment.

Aspects of Selling

  • Product Knowledge
  • Raport
  • Tonality
  • Body Language
  • Persuasion
  • Confidence
    and more…

Below is a great video by Jordan Belfort (The Real Wolf of Wallstreet) that goes more in depth regard the difference between Marketing and Selling.
